Suicides - Overview WHO Collaborating Centre for Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion

Overview

In recent years, suicide has emerged as a major public health problem in India resulting in the death of nearly 150–200,000 persons every year.  The number of attempted suicides is likely to be 10 to 20 times higher and those with suicidal ideations or behaviours are not known.  The causation of suicides is multi-factorial and complex requiring careful delineation of modifiable risk factors. Suicide prevention policies and programmes that are scientific, cost-effective and sustainable is the need of the hour.
