Psychiatric Rehabilitation Services

Overview:

Need for Psychiatric Rehabilitation

It is estimated that about 7% of the population suffers from mental disorders. Adding together all major and minor psychiatric disorders the life time prevalence would be about 25%. According to the National Mental Health Survey 2015-16, the prevalence of those currently suffering from mental illnesses, excluding tobacco use disorders, in the adult Indian population is nearly 10.6% which roughly amounts to 150 million Indians. In the same survey, nearly 1.9% of the population were affected with severe mental disorders in their lifetime and 0.8% were identified to be currently affected with a severe mental disorder.

By the year 2020, the burden of neuropsychiatric disorders worldwide would rise from the current 10.5% to 15%. In addition to treatment with pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods, most have rehabilitation needs in order to reintegrate back into the social mainstream. A focus on recovery-oriented practices and services is as important, if not more, for  persons with mental illnesses, as it is for their family caregivers. This is recognized by the recent Mental Health Care Act – 2017 and Rights of Persons with Disability Act – 2016, which have accessible rehabilitation as one of their tenets.

Over the years, emphasis in psychiatric rehabilitation has shifted from “just keeping patients occupied” to “recovery for community reintegration”. Hence, we consider our services to be “Recovery Oriented Services (ROSeS)”
The aim of the team is to provide services which promote recovery, beyond only the alleviation of symptoms of psychiatric disorders.
