About the Department
The Department of Psychiatry has maintained the tradition of active contribution in service, training and research activities of the Institute. It has continued to play its active role in policy, planning and implementation of programmes in the field of mental health. Clinical services have catered to the needs of patients across the country as well as neighbouring countries through regular outpatient, inpatient and various special clinics for de-addiction, geriatric psychiatry, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, community psychiatry, family psychiatry, perinatal mental health disorders, metabolic disorders and pain management clinic in psychiatry.
The facilities for inpatient clinical services in the department have improved with perinatal, emergency psychiatry services and male geriatric ward. The department has been succesful in integrating Postdoctoral fellowship and DM courses as a part of sub-speciality training over the past years.The PDF courses include Addiction Medicine, Geriatric Psychiatry, Women’s Mental Health, Consultation Liaison Psychiatry, Schizophrenia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Forensic Psychiatry, Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation, Neuro-Psychiatry and Community Psychiatry. The DM courses include Addiction Medicine and Geriatric Psychiatry. The department faculty have been involved in doing high quality research in the field of mental health.
The faculty and students have published several research papers in peer reviewed journals. They have actively collaborated with various other related disciplines of mental health and neurosciences within and outside the Institute. The department has networked with several leading universities and research institutions globally. The department has started innovative way of increasing the faculty strength by new faculty positions that have been entirely funded by external research institutions like Departments of Biotechnology, Science and Technology etc. The achievement of the department in providing good quality clinical service has been recognized by CNBC TV 18 and ICICI Lombard Healthcare Awards. The Department of Psychiatry was awarded the winner of 2013 in the category of “Best Single Speciality Hospital in Psychiatry”. The Department of Psychiatry in collaboration with Center for Public Health, NIMHANS and other allied departments has played an active role in coordinating the National Mental Health Survey to estimate the prevalence of mental disorders across the country.
