Research
Research on the usefulness of yoga and Ayurveda for neuropsychiatric conditions in NIMHANS started in the 1970’s in the department of Neurophysiology and Clinical Psychology. Yoga services and research were brought under a single umbrella in 2007 with the establishment of the Advanced Centre for Yoga in collaboration with Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY), New Delhi. Yoga facilities in NIMHANS got a major breakthrough with the establishment of the NIMHANS Integrated Centre for Yoga (NICY) to carry on the work of the Advanced Centre in 2014. In 2019, the Centre for Integrated Medicine and Research (CIMER) was started, which included Ayurveda into clinical services, academics and research activities. On 30th October 2019, the CIMER was converted to a new Department of Integrative Medicine. In January 2020, the NICY was also incorporated into this new Department, bringing together Ayurveda and Yoga along with Modern Medicine.
In addition, the NICY also houses a 5-year Collaborative Centre for Yoga Therapy and Research which was started with the help of the Central Council for Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (CCRYN), New Delhi, which has supported several research projects in the last 4 years.
More than 65 peer-reviewed and indexed research papers on Yoga and Integrative Medicine have been published from NIMHANS since 2007. Research on yoga for schizophrenia has been acknowledged by the NICE guidelines of the UK. Several Ph.D., DM (Neurology), MD (Psychiatry) dissertations have been completed, and several are ongoing under the aegis of the department. Faculty of the department has given invited lectures in scientific meetings held nationally as well as in many other countries. A large inter-departmental group of faculty interested in yoga research have been meeting on a regular basis and 18 research projects are currently ongoing which are funded by several national and international funding agencies.
