The nature of photography has changed dramatically in the last two decades. Earlier black and White, slides and transparencies, colour photographs and transparencies, as well as blue tone slides were extensively used for teaching and publication. VHS format was used for videos. Editing was laborious and the resulting video quality was not up to mark due to generation loss. In 2006 the department switched from analogue to digital format for both photo and videography. However, now with non-linear editing (editing using software and computer) editing is faster and the resulting edited video of good quality.
Studio
A state of the art video studio was developed in 2011. The studio lighting (cool lights) is suspended on a grid and allows the  lights to be moved as required. Adjacent to the studio is the editing room with a double glass window for observing recording in the studio, and providing instructions and feedback to the camera person/s through the talk back system.
Documentation
Photographs of Institute functions, seminars, conferences, visit of VIPs are taken for documentation. Videos of important Institute events like convocation, scientific sessions of conferences are taken. Video recording of alumni faculty/ director reminiscing about their early days as students and their tenure at NIMHANS was done.

Clinical Photo and Videography Services
Clinical photographs of rare conditions, presentations, and typical cases are taken for documentation, research and teaching purposes.  Clinical photographs and videos are also used for pre-post-surgical/ medication evaluation. Clinical videos are also used for research pre and post intervention evaluation (Surgical / medication), and in showing movements of hands, gait and speech.
Training videos: The department of health education has been instrumental in bringing out customised training videos for students, patient care videos and for caregivers.
Health education videos are used for imparting education in OPD waiting halls such as in CCTV, group settings and at the community.
Animal research: Photographs of experiments conducted at the Central Animal Research facility are documented. For instance, the Department of Mental Health Education has been coordinating with the department of neurosurgery in taking digital images and video of the micro vascular surgery in rats using end to end anastomoses and end to side anastomoses.
Human resource development: From 2013 onwards, the students at the institute are being trained in basic knowledge of photography, editing of videos and effectively bringing out health education videos through practical and theoretical classes. A full-fledged module is being planned for the students interested in learning the skills and techniques of photography and video making.
