Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorder Clinic (PDMD Clinic)

When:              On 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month, except on declared holidays.
Time:               10 AM to 2 PM 
Place:              NIMHANS Out-patient Department (1st Floor in OPD Building)

Service:

This is a speciality clinic for patients (adults or children) with a variety of disorders which classify under "Movement Disorders". These include:

  1. Parkinson's disease, Essential tremor, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Corticobasal Degeneration, Multiple System Atrophy, Parkinson plus syndromes, Diffuse Lewy body disorders, Spinocerebellar Ataxias, Friedreich's Ataxia, Huntington's disease, Hallervorden-Spatz disease, etc.
  2. Problems like tremor, dystonia (including torticollis, Writer's Cramp, Blepharospasm, focal and generalized dystonias), Hemifacial spasm, tics, chorea, athetosis, ballism, myoclonus, or a combination of these problems.
  3. Secondary Movement Disorders as a result of trauma (e.g. head injury), hypoxia, birth asphyxia, kernicterus (severe jaundice at birth), infections of brain (e.g. encephalitis), stroke, metabolic disturbances, etc.
  4. Psychogenic Movement Disorders. The clinic offers a multidisciplinary approach for diagnosis and treatment of these disorders.

We provide:

  1. Clinical evaluation by neurologists well experienced in Movement Disorders (Movement Disorder Specialist).
  2. Investigations including high resolution MRI scans, Functional MRI, electrophysiology (including tremor recording, evaluation of myoclonus, transcranial magnetic stimulation, etc.), screening for metabolic disorders, dynamic posturography (assessment of balance), gait analysis, evaluation of sleep (polysomnography), assessment of autonomic function.
  3. Medical treatment of patients on an out-patient basis or short-term hospital admission (for stabilization of dosage).
  4. Referral to linked specialized services at NIMHANS , which include neuropsychiatric evaluation (by psychiatrist experienced in Movement Disorders), neuropsychological assessment and cognitive and behavioural therapy, neurorehabilitation, balance and gait training, psychosocial assessment and counselling, speech therapy.
  5. Genetic tests and counselling.
  6. Botulinum Toxin injections for a variety of dystonias - toticollis, blepharospams, hemifacial spasm, Wrtier's cramp and focal dystonias. When required, facilities and expertise is available for EMG guided injections of Botulinum Toxin.
  7. Surgical treatment of selected movement disorders by a team of Neurosurgeons who are experienced in Movement Disorders surgery. Surgical treatment for conditions include selected patients of Parkinson's Disease, Essential tremor, secondary tremors, and hemidystonias.

The surgical procedures include:

  1. Deep brain stimulation (DBS)
  2. Lesional surgeries - thalamotomy and pallidotomy

Research:

Apart from the service provided to patients with a variety of Movement Disorders, the Movement Disorders Division of Neurology has also the mandate of manpower development in Movement Disorders and research to understand the pathophysiology of various movement Disorders and improve diagnostics and therapy.

We invite voluntary participation from patients for active research in various areas of Movement Disorders.

Donations of any amount are invited from philanthropists to help poor patients for diagnosis and treatment and for promoting Research.
