Teaching/ Courses

The Department of Mental Health Education conducts regular teaching programs for the doctors and nursing students. This includes qualitative research, mixed research methods, health education module and use of mass media in promoting health education. A module on social and behavioural change and health education is offered to students of Master in Public Health. The teaching programmmes are designed to provide the knowledge and skills in which the students need to be competent in as a health educator. It also emphasises on developing their professional skills in program planning, evaluation and research

Training programme

  • The Department of Mental Health Education, NIMHANS has been conducting Workshop on Introduction to Health Education for Mental and Neurological Disorders for Lady Health Visitor [LHV] Trainees as an enhancement of a programme that has been ongoing for many years. The Lady Health Visitors [LHVs] are frontline public health workers who are trusted members of and have a close understanding of the community they serve. This trusting relationship enables LHVs to serve as a liaison between health/social services and the community to facilitate access to services and improve the quality and cultural competence of service delivery. 
  • The department has also been regular conducting workshops for students and faculty in the area of research methodology, focusing on qualitative research methods and ways of integrating qualitative and quantitative research methods. Some of this work is carried out in collaboration with faculty from Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, Swiss Tropical & Public Health Institute, Basel, Switzerland.
Workshops

The Department of Mental Health Education in collaboration with various departments within the Institute, and the state and national government Institutions has been conducting workshops and training in the area of raising awareness about various mental and neurological disorders and as well as research methodologies.

  • Forthcoming workshop
  • A Workshop on Integrating Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methods – Fundamental Concepts and Innovative Strategiesis being organised with collaboration of Epidemiology Department NIMHANS and Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, Swiss Tropical & Public Health Institute, Basel, Switzerland will be held in the Department of Mental Health Education, from 2-4 September 2014. Mentoring

The Department of Mental Health Education has been mentoring/guiding students in qualitative research methodology from various departments within the Institute and outside from post-graduation to PhD level, and assisting students as well as faculty to develop health education interventions
