Road Traffic Injuries-overview

Globally, nearly 1.2 million deathsare due to Road Traffic injuries (RTIs). Apart from deaths, nearly 50 million persons are estimated to be hospitalized withseveral more seeking care from emergency rooms of health care institutions. More than three fourths of these RTIs occur in Low and Middle Income countries of the world.

A significant amount of disabilities are due to RTIs. The economic losses are estimated to be approximately 2% of gross domestic product in high-income countries and as much as 5% of gross domestic product in some low- and middle-income countries.

In India, more than 150,000 persons die and nearly 7- 8 million are hospitalized due to RTIs every year. The economic losses are estimated to cost 3 % GDP every year. Majority of these deaths and hospitalizations are among young people, men and vulnerable road users like pedestrians, two wheeler riders and pillions, bicyclists and others.

RTIs are predictable and preventable.

The centre works with number of national governments and international partners to reduce the growing burden of RTIs for implementing evidence based interventions.
