Research in
Genetics and Molecular Biology

Objectives:
Effort is made to understand the genetic and molecular basis of diseases of the mind and brain. The laboratory conducts research on the genetic correlates of psychiatric disorders (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, dementia, alcoholism, obsessive-compulsive disorder) through collaboration with several faculty members at NIMHANS, and with other scientists and clinicians. It also provides support for genetic research in neurology and clinical psychology. It focuses on concerted and focused multidisciplinary approach to understand genetics of the diseases of the brain and mind.

Student Activities:
MD/PhD in molecular genetics approaches in psychiatric disorders are being undertaken. Doctoral studies are also available. Students in biotechnology and other related disciplines are trained in molecular techniques.

Research Activities:
Identification of disease susceptibility loci for psychiatric and neurological disorders with complex inheritance (schizophrenia, mood disorders, dementia, addiction) using polymorphisms in putative genes, to generate haplotypes, and study of these haplotype associations with disease phenotype are being used to identify causative genes. In addition, whole genome linkage scans are being done. Endophenotypes including EEG, neuropsychological correlates and imaging studies have also been initiated. Specific mutations linked to neurological disorders (Huntington's disease, ataxias, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy etc) are also being evaluated.

Equipments/Existing Facilities/ Infrastructure:
The Molecular Genetics Laboratory of the Department of Psychiatry, NIMHANS has the following facilities for DNA extraction, storage (-20C freezers), PCR machines (4 PCR machines), and an ABI 36 well slab gel system which is being used routinely for genotyping and sequencing experiments. All these have been provided through research grants provided to the faculty thorough the CSIR, DBT, and the ICMR.
