Human Genetics

The Department of Human Genetics was established in 1985 to carryout research and diagnosis of Genetic disorders. The major activity of the department includes basic and applied research. The current research programs are focused to understand human nervous system disorders at the molecular level. It is also aimed to identify possible novel biomarkers for human brain and nervous system tumors as well asNeuro-psychiatric disorders. In addition, the effect of growth factors on molecular biology of the wound healing process is carried out using animal model. The financial support for our research activities in the form of research grantsare provided by various national and international funding agencies like UGC, CSIR, DST, DBT, ICMR, LSRB and Indo-French joint initiative.

Other activities of our department include (i) manpower development, (ii) teaching and (iii) patient care. So far 15 students have been awarded Ph.D. degree and currently five students are pursuing their Ph.D. In addition, more than one hundred under-graduate and post-graduate students have been trained on genetic and molecular research methodologies. The teaching programs on basic genetics, molecular understanding of the complex human disorders, genetic diagnosis and counseling are being conducted for Nursing, M.Phil and Ph.D students.

The department has been performing chromosomal aberration studies and karyotyping. The genetic counseling services are provided both personal and online to the patients and families having sporadic and familial genetic disorders.

The Department of Human Genetics is focused on research in genetic aspects of humanNeurological and Psychiatric disorders. We have intra-institutional collaboration with the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry. Our major research interests are in the field of molecular genetics of human brain and nervous system tumors, immunogenetics of human neurological and psychiatric disorders and constitutive genetics as well as molecular biology of growth factors aided wound healing process.

With regards to man-power development we offer full time Ph.D. program in Human Genetics. The eligibility criteria to apply for our Ph.D. program include the following: (i) A post graduate degree in any life sciences subjects and (ii) an externally funded research fellowship for a minimum of 3 years.

In addition, we alsoprovide specialized training program for students of Life Science and those with degrees in medicineas well as post graduate students from various recognized colleges, Universities/Institutes. Medical graduates, B.Sc/M.Sc/BE/B.Tech life science students can seek short term training program in Human Genetics and also long term project work.

Human Genetic courses are offered to students who have registered for various degree and diploma courses in NIMHANS. The faculty members from our department render their expertise for guiding Ph.D/MD/M.CH/M.Phil/B.Sc-M.Sc Nursing students of NIMHANS.

The genetic diagnostic service involves pedigree analysis, human Karyotyping and genetic counseling for our patients and families members.
