Aadhara Camp

A special service

For children, adolescents and adults with mental retardation and their families

This service was initiated by the Department in the year 2006. The camp is held on the third Saturday of every month. The chief purpose of this service-activity is evaluation and certification of mental retardation so that individuals with mental retardation residing within Karnataka are able to avail government- benefits for which they may be eligible. The clients are seen at this camp based on prior appointments after they have been registered and evaluated in detail in any adult psychiatry unit or the child and adolescent psychiatry department of NIMHANS. IQ assessments are carried out either at the camp or in the unit where the client may be registered. The entire process from registration, detailed evaluation, assessment to certification by the board is usually completed within three visits. At every camp date, approximately 60- 80 clients are evaluated and issued certificates. Currently, the camp operates from the first floor of the NIMHANS OPD wing with the support from Psychiatry, Psychiatric Social Work Departments and the Medical Records Section of the Institute.
